MA Job Description

The Multicultural Advisor is responsible for facilitating diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice through resident interaction and awareness programs. The Multicultural Advisor is a staff member of the Office of Housing and Residence Life (HRL) and reports directly to the MA supervisors, a Residence Hall Director (RHD) and an Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARHD).

Requirements
To apply for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • A 2.2 cumulative grade point average or better
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the EDHI 200 class with a grade of C or better
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing with HRL and the university
  • Be able to work the entire academic year or as specified by your contract.
  • Have completed at least 23 credit hours by the contract start date
  • Two semesters of collegiate residence hall living at Ball State must be completed by the contract start date

Responsibilities

  • Support and promote the HRL Mission Statement, Diversity Statement, and Departmental Initiatives
  • Complete administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to, meetings, training, planning and presenting, spring and/or summer retreat, and weekly reports
  • Develop, plan, and implement one hall (for example:  Mysch/Hurst) or apartment community program for each assigned area once a semester and 2 campus-wide programs with fellow MA's (one on each side of campus) per semester. All programs should be activity based and engaging for residents. 
  • Be a contact or a resource for conflict resolutions that deal with prejudice, discrimination, etc., and intervene as requested
  • Communicate with supervising directors regularly about community interactions and staff team
  • Develop relationships with hall staff teams and residents through community walks (at least once/month in each assigned areas), activities/programming, and personal interactions
  • Be a positive role model through personal example and demonstrate a commitment and pride for BSU and HRL through respectful language and behavior
  • Support and respect the dignity of all individuals
  • Maintain regular contact with directors regarding residence hall culture and needs of students and staff
  • Complete and post one bulletin board ea. Month of passive programming in each assigned hall or University Apartment location.
  • Attend either hall council meeting or event each month within your assigned areas.
  • Uphold and abide by all federal, state, local laws and statutes and BSU and HRL policies

Additional Opportunities

  • Participate as an EDHI 200 mentor with approval from MA supervisors
  • Opportunity for employment within Housing and Residence Life (up to 10 hours per week) with the permission of the MA supervisors
