Goal
The Ball State fraternity and sorority community will create an intentional and targeted recruitment program that focuses on the values of the community. By 2016, the total membership of the Greek community will be 2060.
What we're going to do:
- Develop an internal and external recruitment marketing plan to target existing students, potential students, and parents of potential students.
- Conduct market research on why students are not joining fraternities and sororities and evaluate the current recruitment efforts.
- Update the fraternity/sorority life website to provide relevant, timely information as well as to reflect the values of the Greek organizations.
- Create a standardized intake policy for NPHC fraternities and sororities.
- Develop a plan will be developed on to get more people to utilize the Greek life Web site.
- Create a recruitment team for the entire fraternity and sorority community. They will coordinate all-Greek recruitment events and presentations and ensure a consistent message is communicated to the campus.
- Develop a marketing plan that targets parents specifically focusing on communication during Orientation and new student acclimation.
- Target chapters struggling with membership numbers for additional education and training on recruitment strategies.
- Evaluate the IFC expansion & colonization process and establish guidelines for future expansion efforts which will include the following: (1) establishing specific expectations for headquarters and colony, (2) establishing a protocol for providing tangible and regular feedback to headquarters and (3) developing an adaptable colony education plan.
- Revise PHC sorority formal recruitment with specific focus on location, timing and content.
- Revise IFC fraternity recruitment with specific focus on use of alcohol, content, and structure/calendar issues.
Progress
- Market research was conducted last fall to determine why students are not joining fraternities and sororities. This information will be used to identify Greek perceptions on campus and revise the current marketing plan as described above. The information will be disseminated to chapters soon.
- The Marketing Implementation Team has evaluated the marketing plan for last year, reviewed the market research done last semester and is in the process of revising the plan for this year.
- Staff members attended training for the new Ball State website and a layout has been finalized based on ideas gathered from research from other university Greek life websites. The tentative timeframe to launch the new site is the beginning of fall semester.
- Panhellenic Total was lowered to 70 last November. Lowering Total will encourage PNMs to stay involved in the formal recruitment process (thus increasing quota) and limiting the gaps between various chapter sizes.
- Panhellenic sororities voted to switch from the fully structured recruitment style to partially structured recruitment (PSR) and dates have been set. Rooms have been reserved on campus to hold the first three rounds of recruitment and preference round will be held at the Horizon Convention Center.
- The NPC consultant team that visited the first weekend in February provided feedback to Panhellenic, students and advisors. Email Ken Burger for a copy of the report.
- IFC Expansion Committee has been formed and met several times throughout the semester. They revised the IFC expansion policy and identified ways to support colonies and future expansion efforts. These ideas will be implemented in the fall.
- A standardized intake policy for the NPHC chapters was created and introduced in January.
- Student Life offered recruitment education programs to IFC fraternities and PHC sororities in March and April. Staff from national headquarters led the programs and topics included how to motivate your members and improving recruitment communication skills.
- The Greek Connections team has been created and members are currently being recruited. The team will give presentations in the fall in an effort to get more people interested in joining fraternities and sororities.
