Alcohol seems to be at the root of most of the problems for the Greek community. Anecdotal evidence also points to the use of other drugs as a problem for a handful of chapters.
- Provide more access/ideas for non-alcoholic social activities/alternative programming. This should be done through university and peer-to-peer interventions and programs.
- SOA should provide regular training on alcohol/drugs, risk management, and safe event planning.
- University should discuss the merits of all chapter houses becoming alcohol free. At the very least, I would suggest the President and Dean of Student Affairs meet with house corporation leaders, advisors, other alumni, and landlords to discuss the issue.
- University should use an alcohol survey to create strategic plan for dealing with these issues – relate to fraternity/sorority community.
- Involved constituents should develop a zero tolerance policy for drug use in chapter living facilities and during events.
- Alcohol needs to be removed from recruitment and new member/pledge events. Chapters should concentrate on more date functions or invitation only functions instead of large parties.
