Greek Strategic Plan
S.W.O.T. Analysis
S.W.O.T. stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.  A S.W.O.T. analysis is a critical component in the development of an effective strategic plan.  This process asks members to assess the organization and is typically conducted near the beginning of the strategic planning process.

The strategic planning committee completed a S.W.O.T. analysis of the BSU Greek community on March 19, 2006.  Below are the results of that process.

Strengths:

  • Currently exist (history)
  • Existence of planning group, growth and willingness to look at issues
  • Great Greek alumni (in vicinity)
  • Committed staff
  • Student buy-in
  • Greater money from Greek alumni over non-Greek
  • Willingness to get input from outside
  • (+) steps with grades and incidents with police
  • Good group of students
  • Campus (looks, facilities)
  • Potential for new members (traditional campus)
  • Not being so old that unwillingness to change
  • Location (Indy, Oxford, Evanston)
  • Strong Greek involvement throughout campus
  • Maturation of BSU

Weaknesses:

  • Councils don't have credibility
  • Poor relationships between chapters and outside Greek life
  • Not as many engaged alumni
  • Do we have enough on committee for true buy-in?
  • Haven't learned how to cultivate relationships
  • Main focus on advisors, not alumni
  • Philanthropy events disjointed
  • So much focus on fraternities, sororities, not as supported
  • Facilities
  • Young leaders
  • Recruitment (not consistent, university commitment, lack of marketing, relationships on campus, lack of effort, come to us mentality, negative parent perception)
  • Student limited financially
  • # of individual critical incidents
  • Hazing (unwillingness to address)
  • Scholarship

Opportunities:

  • Technology (Facebook, etc.)
  • New view/approach of BSU, word out on academic programs
  • New BSU strategic plan
  • New facilities and opportunities
  • Partnerships with HQ (easy access)
  • Starting point with numbers
  • Parents
  • Be more involved with Admissions and Orientation
  • BSU attracting high caliber students
  • Getting Alumni that are successful to promote Greek life, partner with Career Center?
  • Utilizing Daily News
  • Opportunities for giving through Collegiate Housing Act
  • 1st generation college

Threats:

  • We are own worst enemy
  • Parents
  • University's perception of Greek's
  • Critical incidents (alcohol & hazing)
  • Technology (lack of interpersonal skills)
  • Still a significant amount of 1st generation college
  • Unwillingness to enforce standards (lack of accountability)
  • What other organizations can offer
  • Facilities
  • Over programming
  • Burn-out of volunteers/staff
  • Young advisor/lack of multi-generation
  • Lack of advisor training
