Muncie, Indiana, is a community of 65,000 people about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Coldwell Banker ranked the city as the
most affordable college town in the country in 2007 based on the company’s Home Price Comparison Index.
And once you’re here, you’ll see how Muncie has many advantages of larger cities without many of the hassles. If you need a big-city fix, in just a few hours you can travel to nearby Chicago, Cincinnati, Dayton, Detroit, Louisville, and St. Louis.
Muncie boasts many unique attractions including the
Minnetrista Cultural Center and Oakhurst Gardens, the
National Model Aviation Museum, and
Cardinal Greenway, a recreational trail for athletes of all kinds. The
Muncie Symphony offers first-rate programs featuring nationally known artists, and the
Muncie Civic Theatre produces plays for all audiences.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Prairie Creek Reservoir is a 1,252-acre manmade lake surrounded by 3,000 acres of rolling hills. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish, and boat docks are available.
The city has the distinction of being one of the most studied in our nation, and it is nicknamed Middletown USA because of sociological research done in the 1920s and 1930s that identified Muncie as a barometer of social trends in America. Today the
Center for Middletown Studies continues the pioneering work of Robert and Hellen Merrell Lynd by sponsoring and promoting research on themes the Lynds explored.
