Long cited for innovative programs, new music activities, a wide and varied performance program, and national leadership in music education, the Ball State University School of Music offers programs leading to two master's degrees and the doctor of arts degree.

Application/Admission Requirements

  • M.M. and M.A. applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School and must be approved by School of Music faculty. Applicants are invited to present on-campus auditions or, when a personal audition is not possible, to send audition tapes. (Conducting applicants must audition in person.) Applicants for academic programs are invited to send research papers, class projects, and compositions, as appropriate, and ordinarily will have majored or minored in music at the undergraduate level.
  • D.A. applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School and also must be approved by School of Music faculty. The applicant must have a master's degree from a regionally accredited school. The cumulative grade point average on the master's degree must be not less than 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
  • International students must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

Graduate Assistantships

A number of full- and half-time graduate and doctoral assistantships are available each year to students in the School of Music.
