Health Science
One facet of the health science graduate program is designed for students seeking a comprehensive background in community health education planning (including program development, implementation, and evaluation) related to health promotion and disease prevention activities in community health agencies, wellness centers, health-care facilities, and business and industrial settings.

The health science graduate program also offers advanced course work in school health education for students interested in maintaining or upgrading their teacher certification.

Degrees Offered

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Health Science
  • Master of Science (M.S.) in Health Science (Students are expected to demonstrate a higher level of research skills in this program by completing a thesis.)
  • Graduate Minors in Health Science
  • Major of Cognate in Health Science for a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Science or Science Education

Applied Opportunities

Internship experiences are available in a wide variety of settings including patient education, worksite locations, and non-profit health-related agencies.  Classroom teaching opportunities are available to all majors, regardless of assistantship status.  Those wishing to gain research experience may work on a faculty project or conduct their own mentored research, possible leading to a thesis.  You are invited to visit the department website, www.bsu.edu/physiology-health, to learn about faculty research interests.

Application/Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School.
  • Applicants must have bachelor's degrees from an accredited college or university with at least an academic minor in health education, health promotion, or a related health field. Applicants without this academic preparation will be required to take extra coursework.
  • Students applying for graduate assistantships must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.
  • Applicants must complete a departmental graduate admission application form available from the department or online.
  • Doctoral degree applicants should contact the department for additional requirements.
  • International students must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships are available and carry a stipend, full tuition remission, and a waiver of out-of-state fees. (Students are responsible for the dedicated fees.) Further information may be obtained from the department.
