Family and Consumer Sciences

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers specialized options and/or programs in fashion merchandising, apparel design, residential property management, and dietetics.
The program is known for its flexibility in meeting the unique needs and interests of its students.

  • Students may develop programs in education, family and child, hospitality and food management, and interior design.
  • The new residential property management program is the first program of its type nationally.
  • Students from diverse backgrounds may enter programs, complete pre-requisites when necessary, and finish a specialized graduate degree program.

Degrees Offered

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Master of Science (M.S.) in Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Master of Science (M.S.) in Dietetics.  (Thesis research is required for the M.S.)

Applied Opportunities

  • The department offers the American Dietetic Association Dietetic Internship, an accredited dietetic internship, with classes beginning in January and June. Those admitted to the internship must meet the didactic requirements and have completed nine graduate hours from Ball State.
  • Ball State's nationally accredited Child Study Center provides experience opportunities for graduate students.
  • The department's Allegre restaurant offers fine dining experiences for hospitality and food management students.
  • Selected courses provide service learning opportunities.

Application/Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School.
  • The department also requires all applicants to submit a letter of intent, a resume, and two letters of recommendation.
  • Those applying for the master's in dietetics must provide an original, signed American Dietetic Association Verification of Completion Statement from the Didactic Program in Dietetics director or a Declaration of Intent to complete a dietetic program in dietetics that indicates academic work was completed within the last five years. Courses for verification must be completed before the master's is granted.
  • International students must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

Graduate Assistantships

  • The department offers eight to ten graduate assistantships. Students awarded an assistantship receive full tuition remission. (Students are responsible for dedicated fees.) They also receive a stipend for ten months. Students with an assistantship work 20 hours per week as either a teaching assistant or a research assistant.
  • Applications are available from the department and have a March 1 submission deadline.
