Adult, Higher, and Community Education
With more than 125 doctoral graduates, and hundreds more master's graduates since 1981, the adult and community education program has assisted students to work effectively with adults in a variety of contexts including

  • higher education
  • business
  • industry
  • health care
  • government
  • community, social, and religious organizations

An applied program, many students are working professionals, allowing students to combine educational pursuits with professional practice. Students do not need to put their professional employment on hold to complete degrees in the program.

  • Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Adult, Higher, and Community Education 

Applied Opportunities

Guided internships are available. Students also may organize individual internships at specially arranged placements.

Application/Admission Requirements

All applicants must:

  • meet the minimum requirements of the Graduate School.
  • submit a completed departmental graduate application form.
  • submit two official college/university transcripts.
  • submit letters of recommendation (three for M.A. programs, five for Ed.D program).
  • International students must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

In addition to the above, applicants for the doctoral program must submit:

  • current education and employment vitae.
  • evidence of high levels of competence in English.
  • a 500 to 1000 word autobiography.
  • a 500 to 1000 word philosophy of education statement.
  • a three to five page description of the student's intended purpose for earning a doctoral degree.


Doctoral program applicants should contact the department for additional requirements.

Graduate Assistantships

Several assistantships are available each year for both master's and doctoral students.
