Human Bioenergetics
The Human Performance Laboratory at Ball State University represents a multidisciplinary approach to the preparation of students for advanced research orientated careers in exercise physiology and related fields. The Human Bioenergetics PhD program collaborates with the biology, physiology, chemistry, and medical research education programs to provide a broad spectrum of scientific knowledge that focuses on translational physiology of human performance. Students work closely with faculty, students and research technicians in all aspects of the research process and work in a challenging and enriching environment.

Program Description

The Human Bioenergetics PhD program is located in the Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) at Ball State University, and was established in 1980. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art technology and provides students with the necessary skills to conduct independent research. The students will complete a three year program of study that will stress both academics and practical research experience. The student starts their research training by learning the necessary laboratory skills to conduct experiments, and progresses to a leadership role in the completion of that research.

Application/Admission Requirements


  • Students must be admitted to both the department and the Graduate School.
  • Submit an Exercise Science Admission Application (see http://www.bsu.edu/physicaleducation/graduate/exscigrad).
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended (you will need a minimal GPA of 3.0 on a 4 point scale on the bachelor's degree or 3.2 on a 4 point scale on the master's degree) to the Graduate School, Ball State University, Muncie, IN 47306.
  • Submit GRE scores.
  • Submit a curriculum vita.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation.
  • International students must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

Graduate Assistantships


The Human Bioenergetics program awards 2-4 graduate assistantships each year and acceptance into the program would be linked to one of those positions. The assistantships consist of a stipend and tuition waiver. (Students are responsible for dedicated fees.)
