Counseling
The Department of Psychology offers two degree programs:

  • The master's degree program with a major in counseling is an entry level, terminal-degree program for students interested in training for careers in the helping professions. The masters program in counseling prepares graduates to work as professional counselors in a variety of community and school settings.  It is also designed to serve as preparation for entry into a doctoral program.
  • The master's degree with a major in social psychology allows students to pursue three program tracks: general, the double major in social psychology and counseling, and applied social psychology. It is designed to prepare students for entry into a doctoral program or to support careers in a variety of human services fields.

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling, Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Social Psychology, General
  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Social Psychology, Applied
  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Social Psychology, with double major in Social Psychology and Counseling
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counseling Psychology

Also offered are:

  • School Counselor license for those who have previously completed a master's in counseling from our department.

Application/Admission Requirements

In addition to the Graduate School requirements:

  • Masters applicants must have completed either 15 semester hours or 24 quarter hours of undergraduate psychology or related courses, with at least an overall GPA of 3.0 in these courses. 
  • Materials required by the department include a departmental application, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and scores on the GRE general test.
  • International students must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.


Doctoral program applicants should contact the department for additional requirements.

Graduate Assistantships

Two graduate assistantships are available in the Department of Counseling Psychology for masters' students; those students are typically assigned as assistants in the administrative office.  All doctoral students receive assistantships in their first and second years.
