Graduate School
Career and Technical Education
The long-established master of arts in technology education, now offered 100 percent online, is designed to meet the needs of current technology teachers, or those who have previously completed a bachelor's degree in technology education. The degree also may be useful to those who teach technology at any level, including community college instructors. Many school districts increase the salary of a teacher who earns a master's degree, or takes classes toward a master's. In some states, a master's degree is required for professional teacher certification. This degree does not provide initial teacher licensure, but some of the courses it contains may be used in pursuit of a teaching license.

The master of arts in career and technical education, offered entirely online, is designed to meet the needs of current career and technical teachers, or those who teach technical education in any setting and wish to pursue an advanced degree. The degree can be particularly useful to community college instructors in technical subjects.

Degrees Offered

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Technology Education
  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Career and Technical Education

Applied Opportunities

Unlike on-campus master's degrees, on-line programs enable students to directly apply their learning in their current jobs, while benefiting from exposure to a wide variety of their fellow students' job situations. Specific opportunities, such as an optional practicum in technology education for the elementary grades and an optional thesis allow for greater opportunities to apply learning.

Application/Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree in any area from an accredited institution.
  • Applicants also must meet the Graduate School admission requirements.
  • Although some universities that offer master's degrees in technology education require applicants to have earned a bachelor's degree in that field and have a teaching license; at Ball State, the bachelor's degree may be in any field.
  • International students also must apply through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

Graduate Assistantships

Although this program is offered online, on-campus graduate assistantships are available. For information, contact the department.
