What is a Fellowship? Fellowships are similar to scholarships. The award is based on merit and you are not required to work for or repay the funds. Your only obligation is to maintain a high level of academic performance.
What is the Basis for the Award?
Fellowships are awarded on:
- the strength of the student's grade point average
- scores on standardized examinations (GRE)
- letters of recommendation.
- Applicants must also complete the application for admission, return it to the Graduate School, and be admitted to an advanced degree program to be eligible for consideration for a university fellowship.
How do I Apply for Fellowship?
You do not apply for a Fellowshp directly. Applications come from departments, so for your name to be considered, you would need to ask your program advisor to forward your application. Each department decides whose application to submit and must obtain the approval of their college dean. Approved applications should be received by the dean of the Graduate School no later than March 1 to be considered for the following academic year.
Information on minimum qualifications and applications procedures are available from major departments or the dean of the Graduate School, Ball State University, Muncie IN 47306.
What are the Benefits of a Fellowship?
- Fellows will receive a tuition waiver (including waiver of out-of-state fees), but must pay dedicated fees.
- Fee adjustments will be applicable only during the academic time period (usually August-May) of the fellowship award.
- Fellows will also receive a stipend that will be determined by the dean of the Graduate School. Stipends are paid in 10 month increments. The stipend amount is similar to that received by graduate assistants in a department.
