THE FOURTEENTH ANNUAL SHARE-INDIANA CONFERENCE

ON PARENTING & TEACHING GIFTED CHILDREN

Saturday, September 13, 2008

9 AM - 3 PM (Registration at 8:15 AM)

Indianapolis Marriott North at Keystone at the Crossing

We're having a party! Join us in celebrating the 15th birthday of Ball State's Center for Gifted Studies & Talent Development! The event will take place at the 14th Annual Share-Indiana Conference on Parenting and Teaching Gifted Children, Saturday, September 13, from 9 AM to 3 PA at the Indianapolis Marriott North at Keystone at the Crossing.  The conference will have two full-day sessions running concurrently.  For this special event we are featuring two nationally recognized speakers: John Samara for teachers and Tracy Cross for parents (bios are below). Teachers and those wishing to learn more about the Curry/Samara model for writing and differentiating curriculum should sign up for the Teacher Session.  Parents, counselors, and those wishing to know more about parenting issues and social/emotional issues of gifted children should register for the Parent Session. As our thanks to all of you who have supported the Center for the last 15 years, each participant will receive over $100 worth of materials. Our presenters have personally selected those items that will be most useful to those attending each session.

This year we are again holding the conference in Indianapolis in response to the overwhelming feedback we had on last year's conference. Share-IN is co-sponsored by the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities and the Indiana Association for the Gifted.  You may register using the form availble for download on this page (upper right). Seats are limited, so be among the first to register and assure your place at this conference.  For more information, please contact Dr. Cheryll Adams at 800-842-4251 or cadams@bsu.edu.

John Samara, "Making a Difference Through Differentiation"

Samara, Director of The Curriculum Project, has served as a classroom teacher, coordinated a program for the gifted, served as an instructor at university sites, and coordinated a university outreach program. As a co-developer of the Curry/Samara Model for writing curriculum, he has co-authored over twenty publications relating to the Curry/Samara Model (CSM), and currently develops classroom materials and designs software to support implementation of CSM. In addition, he provides staff development, administrator training and long term technical assistance to education agencies implementing the Model Classrooms Project. Several research studies have confirmed a "statistically significant improvement in student performance on standardized test scores" as a result of implementation and continued use of the Curry/Samara Model of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Tracy Cross, "Parents and Counselors Working in Partnership to Guide the Psychosocial Development of Gifted Students"

Cross is the George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Gifted Studies at Ball State University as well as serving as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in Teachers College. He is the former Executive Director of the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities.  Tracy is the founder and an active participant in the Center for Gifted Studies at BSU. Tracy's research centers on understanding how gifted students cope with being gifted--often realized as a burden for those endowed with exceptional intellectual gifts. As a parent of four gifted children, Tracy is well-equipped to discuss the issues of gifted children, particularly those in the social and emotional realm. In 2004-2005, Tracy was named Researcher of the Year at BSU. "I'm a psychologist who studies the life of gifted students," says Cross. "Over the years I've learned that they often feel stigmatized about being gifted."   Cross has published more than 200 articles about gifted studies and delivered several hundred conference presentations.
