Master's Degree
The Department of Geology offers two graduate major options leading to either the Master of Science or the Master of Arts in Geology. The department has also started participating in the University's science Doctorate of Education programs. A Minor in Geology is also available at the graduate level.
The M.S. in Geology requires a thesis and is the traditional graduate degree leading to professional work in all specialties of geology. We have recently instituted a new Geology M.A. program, with an innovative component of nationally standardized testing. Also, our participation in the University's science Doctorate of Education program opens up new avenues of preparation for geoscience education careers in secondary, community college, and other small college settings. The small size of our department allows us to be responsive to individual student needs and interests in planning a program.

Admission Requirements:
Students with undergraduate grade-point averages of 2.75 or higher, or 3.0 for the second half of undergraduate career, will be admitted to the Graduate School. Students with lower GPA may apply for probationary admission. The Department of Geology requires Graduate Record Examination (G.R.E.) scores of at least 470 Verbal, 530 Quantitative, and 520 Analytical (or an acceptable combination of G.P.A. and G.R.E scores), and that applicants submit the scores. Candidates are expected have completed acceptable geology field courses or field camp as undergraduates; alternatively, they have to complete Ball State field camp as part of the master's requirements.
Students with undergraduate degrees in the geology, earth sciences and other scientific fields, and, in some cases, with majors other than in science, are eligible to apply for assistantships.
