These experiences sparked his interest in human geography, and in particular, his research interests in Pacific Rim ports and development, and the geographies of ethnic-Southeast Asians in North America. His current research work focuses on the political economy of peri-urban vegetable farming Hong Kong, and in the United States, the ethnic-Vietnamese business economy of New Orleans, Louisiana. Chris has been the recipient of two Fulbright grants, one to Indonesia in 1989, and the other to Hong Kong in 1999. In fall semester 2003, Chris was on sabbatical leave, part of which was spent in Shanghai, China. Dr. Airriess' most frequently taught class is the Geography of the Cultural Environment (GEOG 121), that introduces students to an appreciation of the cultural complexities of folk and popular cultures, religion, language, ethnicity, and food habits.
