Mathematics: Front-end Estimation

Subject:           Mathematics                                                                          Grade: 3

Standard: #2 Computation

Key Concept: Estimation can be used to approximate an answer.

Generalization: Children will decide whether answers are reasonable through the process of front-end estimation.

Background: Children have rounded numbers to nearest 10’s and 100’s by using number lines, number chart, etc.  Children need to know which 10’s or 100’s a given number falls between before beginning process of front-end estimation.

Tiered in:  process

Tiered according to readiness.

Tier I:  (Below grade level) The students will play a game of Concentration.  The students will match numbers on red cards to front-end estimation on blue cards.  Children will fill in a worksheet to show the numbers and their front-end estimates.

Tier II: (At grade level) The students will play a Bingo Game.  Bingo cards have numbers on them.  A stack of front-end estimate cards will be placed in the middle of the table.  In turn, each child will flip a card from the stack and show it to the group.  The students will cover a space on their Bingo card to match the front-end estimate card.  After playing 4 or 5 games, the students will complete a matching worksheet for front-end estimation.

Tier III: (Above grade level) The students will bring in grocery ads from the newspaper.  They will create a grocery list.  They are to categorize items under the food groups (meat, fruit/vegetables, grain, dairy, and fats).  The students will list at least 3 items under each category and total the cost using front-end estimation.

For an additional challenge, the students might pick what items they could buy for $20.00.
