Subject: Math Grade:
3
Standard:
5 Measurement
Key Concept: There are standard units used to in
linear measurement.
Generalization: An inch is a standard unit used to
measure the length of an object.
Background: All students have had a lesson on
inches. All students have had the opportunity to use a ruler and measure the
lengths of objects to the nearest inch.
Tiered in product
Tiered according to readiness
Tier I: (High) Materials: Measuring devices,
handout, prediction cards
Procedures: Student will be given four measurement
prediction cards. For example a card may say, “find something in the room that
is 12 inches long.” Students will predict something that they think is 12
inches long and write their prediction on the handout under the appropriate
column. They will do this for each of the cards. Once predictions are made they
will go to the items and measure them. They will write the actual length of the
object to the nearest inch in the appropriate column on the handout. They will
then find the difference of the length of the object and the predicted length
and write the answer in the appropriate column on the handout.
Example:
Can
you find something in the room that is 12 inches long?

1 floor tile
15 in. 12 in. 3 in.
Tier II: (Medium/Low) Materials: Measuring devices,
handout
Procedures: Student will be given a measuring device
and a handout. Each student will measure 10 objects in the room of their choice
to the nearest inch. The students will record their measurements on a handout.
Example:
Pencil 4in.
Book 13in.
Assessment:
Tier 1- Student will turn in completed handout.
Students will be assessed on accuracy and completion.
Tier 11- Student will turn in a completed handout.
Students will be assessed on accuracy and completion.
