Apply for Undergraduate Scholarships - Department of Physics and Astronomy

In order to receive any of the departmental awards, applicants must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

  1. rank in the top ten percent of their graduating class
  2. have a combined Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) verbal, math, and written score of 1500 or above
  3. have demonstrated outstanding achievement in high school science and/or mathematics

Application Procedure

All applications must be completed and returned on or before 5:00 p.m. on the first Friday of March for consideration for scholarships for the following fall semester.

All applicants:

  1. must be currently enrolled at or verify that they have made application to Ball State University for admission
  2. must submit a completed Department of Physics and Astronomy Scholarship Application form with a double-spaced, typewritten autobiography, two or three pages in length, with some particular attention to their goals and aspirations in physics or physics teaching and to their financial need
  3. must submit a transcript of high school grades for incoming freshmen or current college transcript for college students
  4. should ask at least two school officials (teachers or administrators) to submit confidential letters of recommendation.

Scholarships

Ronald D., Harriet T., Loraine J., & Merle M. Miller Scholarship Award: This award consists of a one-year credit of $1000 that is applied to the student's tuition and fees. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are eligible for this award. Recipients are eligible for renewal annually subject to the criteria of this award.

Irena Mrozowski Scholarship Award: This award consists of a one-year $500 credit that is applied to the student's tuition and fees. Incoming freshmen, transfer, and current Ball State undergraduate students are eligible for this award.

Raymond E. Burns and Georgia M. Burns Memorial Scholarship: This award consists of a one-year $500 credit that is applied to the student's tuition and fees. Incoming freshmen, transfer, and current Ball State undergraduate students are eligible for this award. This scholarship is not based on financial need.

Alumni, Faculty, and Friends Freshman Scholarship Award (incoming freshmen only): This award consists of a one-year $500 scholarship that is applied to the student's tuition and fees.

Alumni, Faculty, and Friends Undergraduate Scholarship Award: This award consists of a one-year $500 scholarship that is applied to the student's tuition and fees. Incoming freshmen, transfer, and current Ball State undergraduate students are eligible for this award.

Selection

Final selection will be made on the basis of financial need (except for the Burns Scholarship), academic ability, character, creativity, and potential for academic excellence. The selection committee is composed of three faculty members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the department head, and a representative of the Student Financial Aid Office.
