Carolyn Owsley
The many friends and colleagues of Carolyn Owsley pay tribute to a multifaceted, dynamic individual who crossed our paths for just a short time in Florida, but who created some amazing memories. Married to Joseph Owsley for 53 years, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother; but it was as an educator that we came to know and love Carolyn. She was a seasoned, 30 year veteran of teaching in Kentucky when arrived in Palm Beach County. She came, not to retire, but to continue making a difference in her classroom, her school, and our county. She was known to jump in and get involved, saying it was a lot easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. Carolyn loved her students. Her hands-on approach to learning through application earned her their love in return. She amazed them with her vitality; as a result her vibrant personality was able to encourage many student leaders through the years. She became the HEART of FCCLA in our county and the state of Florida. We all remember her audacity to get up on stage in the spur of the moment and lead the students in a rousing "In Right, Out Right." Trips to FCCLA State and National Conferences are remembered as times full of surprises; Carolyn could always be counted on to do the unexpected. Carolyn's own leadership skills were called into play when she became the supervisor of Family and Consumer Science teachers for Palm Beach County Schools. She tried, many times with success, to change who she felt were arm chair teachers; believing that students learned most by doing. She was a visionary in our field, charging ahead and expecting us to follow. She constantly dared us step out of our boxes and become leaders instead of just conforming without questioning. According to one teacher, " we never knew where we would end up, but it was always a heck of a ride." Many of us found a mentor in Carolyn. She always had time to listen, suggest, prod, and challenge without judgment. One new teacher, facing the challenges of teaching in a high school, said she would have returned to industry had Carolyn not inspired and encouraged her to remain in the classroom; ensuring that it would work out. At whatever level Carolyn touched our lives; it is safe to say she was "In Right, Out Right, Happy All the Time!" She is greatly missed.
