Joyce as Ellen
Joyce Miles has influenced my life as a Family and Consumer Sciences professional, and guided my service to AAFCS and the Minnesota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. I first met Joyce when she served as AAFCS Affiliate Vice-President. As she led the Affiliate Leadership Conference that I attended as an Affiliate President-elect, what an impression she made on me! Her passion for our profession, her expertise in leadership training, and her tireless commitment were evident to me then, and continue to earn my respect to this day. It was that powerful impact she made upon me, and the long-lasting value of the Affiliate Leadership Conference that guided me into greater service and dedication to AAFCS. She was a wise and caring mentor, and continued to show leadership as she encouraged participation and expertise in me, and in many others. Leaders of AAFCS may come and go, but Joyce's dedication and commitment to the organization has spanned decades. She truly is a model of what effective leadership should be. Joyce has willingly accepted many roles and responsibilities in AAFCS. In addition to serving as Affiliate Vice-President, she has dedicated much service to the Development Committee, the Legacy Society, and the Certification Committee, among others. She generously contributes to all. She travels extensively to serve the profession and the organization. The work that Joyce Miles has undertaken to research the life and work of Ellen Swallow Richards is inspiring. The DVD that she wrote and produced tells the story of Ellen's life and career, in pictures and narration. The historically accurate live performance that Joyce has created, In Her Own Words, brings Ellen Swallow Richards alive before the eyes of the audience, using Ellen's letters and writings. The work that Joyce has done as the voice of Ellen Richards today will be a legacy to all FACS professionals. Ellen Swallow Richards lived and served at the beginning of the twentieth century, and thanks to the creativity, the dedication and the generosity of Joyce Miles, Ellen lives and serves at the beginning of the twenty first century as well. My thanks to Joyce Miles for her gifts to us all. It is my pleasure to nominate her for the AAFCS Centennial Virtual Hall of Fame.
