WHITAKER, SPANGLER RECEIVE HONORS
Two faculty awards recognize outstanding service, leadership.  Sue Whitaker was recently inducted into the University of Kentucky's College of Human Environmental Sciences Hall of Fame.  Recipients of this honor have a record of commitment and contribution to the College and their professions, or have demonstrated a commitment to the mission of the College, or have contributed to the College through their personal or professional affiliation.  Whitaker served as president of the American Home Economics Association from 1995- 1996 and continues to provide extensive professional service to the organization, now named the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She served as chairperson for Ball State's Department of Family and Consumer Sciences from 1987- 1998.  Her service to community groups such as United Way and Altrusa is often focused on projects that benefit families and individuals.

Alice Spangler received Ball State University's Outstanding Administrative Service Award in the spring.  She has served as the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences chairperson since 1998.  The following are excerpts from the citation:  Spangler has brought to her department administrative skills, personality, and visioning – all contributing to positive leadership and major strategic changes. One of the changes is in departmental growth, with FCS having 392 declared majors in 1998, and by fall 2004, a total of 910.   Her leadership and support for the development of new and revised programs, successful recruitment and retention of majors, and articulation agreements with two-year state colleges and systems in Indiana and Ohio, are reasons for the jump.   Colleagues report that in a multidisciplinary department, Spangler "has the ability to look at the broad picture, and that she is "well organized, rigorously fair, sensitive, and respectful in her dealings with staff, students and faculty. She welcomes input without becoming defensive, thinks well on her feet, and is cool under fire."
