Scholarships and Contests
This page provides information on scholarships and writing competitions sponsored by LIT.
LIT Scholarships
Executive Secretary Bruce W. Hozeski announces the Board has approved that LIT would award at least two $1000 scholarships each year. The guidelines for these LIT Scholarships are as follows:
- Lambda Iota Tau (LIT) grants two or more $1000 scholarships to LIT members who will be in good standing during each academic year.
- Each chapter sponsor, with input from the chapter membership (if feasible), should recommend one candidate for this award.
- The application packet submitted must include the following:
This entire packet must be received at the LIT Headquarters, c/o Professor Bruce W. Hozeski, Department of English, Ball State University, Muncie, IN 47306, by 5 p.m. on May 31st.
- a nomination letter from the sponsor
- an essay or piece of creative writing from the student applicant
- an essay of 1000 words or less on the student's career goals and objectives
- The applications will be reviewed by a committee of the following:

Professor William Miller, LIT Past President
One or more members of the Board
assisted by Ms. Karen Taylor, LIT Administrative Assistant.- The candidates will be evaluated on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and character, as well as service.
- No consideration will be given to age, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, or national citizenship of the candidate.
- The candidate, obviously, must meet the basic LIT standards: Undergraduates must be in the top 35% of their class and have a B average in at least 12 semester hours, and graduate students must have completed at least one semester or term with an A- average.
LIT Journal Prizes
Professor Hozeski also announced that the Board approved an increase of the number of prizes that will be awarded for the best publications in the LIT Journal. Now, instead of one prize, a total of four will be awarded: best poem, best short story, best essay, and best critical piece. The prize amount is still $100, and all pieces printed in the LIT Journal are automatically considered for the awards.
