Teaching Major Decision Point 3 Requirements

1. Hours & GPA Requirements

  • You must be within 9 hours of completion of content courses; must have completed 93 hours overall; and must have earned at least a 2.5 G.P.A. both overall and in content courses.
  • You must have earned a C or better in all professional education and content courses, and you must maintain a 2.5 overall G.P.A. in professional education courses.

2. Decision Point 3 Required Courses and ENG 395 Artifact

Required Courses

In order to pass Decision Point 3, you must complete all but 9 hours of your content area courses. You must pass the following courses before completing Decision Point 3:

  • COMM 330
  • ENG 206
  • ENG 240 or 250
  • ENG 350
  • ENG 395 (ENG 395 Lesson Plan Rubric)

Artifact

There is one required artifact in Decision Point 3 from ENG 395. For this course, your instructor will fill out a rubric (i.e. scoring sheet) for the required artifact and enter it into rGrade. You may view the rubrics used to assess your artifact by clicking on the “red cube” icon in Rgrade.

You must pass the artifact with a C or better. If you do not, then we have established a process where you can attempt to “remediate” the artifact. In this case, please contact Dr. Adam Beach, the Director of Undergraduate Programs (285-8574) to begin the remediation process. The student must successfully revise the artifact within the semester following the course in which he/she failed the artifact. If the student fails to revise the artifact up to acceptable standards, he/she will have the choice of retaking the class or dropping the teaching major. The revision of the artifact will not change the student’s course grade.

3. Disposition Assessment

Decision Point 3 Disposition Assessment takes place in ENG 395. For information on Dispositions Assessments see the following information from Teacher’s College: Dispositions article. This page also includes a link to the rubric used to assess your dispositions.

4. Professional Growth Plan: Phase Two

You must complete Phase Two of your Professional growth Plan (PGP). The web site for the PGP can be found at: http://www.bsu.edu/web/pgpbsu.  You may also consult this information from Teacher’s College: PGP article.  If your scores for the PGP have not been properly recorded in Rgrade, please contact Roberta Cunningham in Teacher's College at 285-5447.

5. Decision Point 3 Portfolio Review

At Decision Point 3, your portfolio needs to include a revised set of ten reflective statements that meet DP 3 expectations. You should retain in your portfolio your reflective statements from Decision Points 1 and 2 so that reviewers can chart the development of your thinking about each INTASC Principle. Your portfolio will also need to include one artifact for each of seven of the ten INTASC principles with accompanying rationales clearly labeled DP 3. (Total = 7 artifacts).

More Information about Portfolios
