Hiring with Vision1. IntroductionIn 1997, at the request of Provost Warren Vander Hill, the English Department wrote this document to serve as a guide for its hiring during the next ten years, and to make a public announcement of its hiring needs, expectations, and plan. At that time, a Prologue noted that previous hiring practices would result in an unusual concentration of retirements, giving the department an opportunity to renew and reshape itself to meet the current demands of the discipline -- as well as to set a course for the future. It argued that the department should be approved to hire a substantial number of tenure line faculty members in order to (1) replace faculty who retired, (2) respond to increasing enrollment and expanded programs, and (3) address the department's high ratio of contract-to-tenure line faculty. This updated version of "Hiring with Vision" includes both original and revised text from 1997, as well as a supplement written in 2003. Continued
