Muncie and Central Indiana

You may know Muncie, Indiana, as "Middletown, USA," as the origin of Ball canning jars, as home to David Letterman's alma mater, or even as home to Jim Davis' testy cat "Garfield." In many ways, Ball State University now lies at the center of Muncie's present and future.

When the five Ball brothers brought their company to Muncie following the discovery of natural gas at the turn of the 20th century, they helped initiate an industrial boom that carried Muncie well into the century. When they bought the defunct Muncie National Institute, giving the land and buildings to the state of Indiana in 1918, they began a tradition of educational achievement that not only has outlived that industrial boom, but established a tradition that is carrying Muncie into the 21st century. Now the largest employer in Delaware County, Ball State University's position in Muncie illustrates the critical role "information" and education will play in American culture in the decades to come.

Situated about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana, Muncie is within three hours driving distance from Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton, Ohio, as well as Louisville, Kentucky, with St. Louis, Missouri, Chicago, Illinois, and Detroit, Michigan each a five to siz hour drive away.
