About the Department

Since its conversion from a Teachers College, Ball State has experienced three decades of growing pains, and finally maturation, as a University. At the turn of the century, it has emerged as an outstanding institution of higher education for the state of Indiana. One key aspect of this maturation is a focus, in the classroom and in the reward system, on effective teaching, accompanied by research. Another is a second, large capital campaign, one-third of which is dedicated to the support of academic programs.

Because of an English Department's responsibilities within a contemporary university, English faculty can play a leading role in Ball State’s efforts to enhance its position within the state and the nation. In addition, because of a large number of retirements, we are in a position to reshape our faculty and programs to reflect the changes in English Studies that have occurred in recent years. We seek well-trained, dynamic, and dedicated individuals who will enjoy contributing to our creation of an outstanding department and university.
