Additional Information
Josef Strauss, brother of Johann Strauss, trained as an engineer. He was known as ‘Pepi' by his family and close friends, and Johann once said of him: 'Pepi is the more gifted of us two; I am merely the more popular...'. Johann Strauss, Josef's older brother, was known in his lifetime as 'the waltz king' and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. His father did not want him to become a musician but rather a banker; nevertheless he studied the violin secretly as a child.
