Advising Tips

  • Get to know your dapr.  First, you'll find general core curriculum information.  Then, you'll find information about decision points (the sequencing of our program).  Last, you'll find a summary of major requirements.  Please review:
    • DECISION POINT 2, Admission to the Teaching Curriculum.  Our goal is for you to be admitted as soon as possible (because it effects when graduation will occur).  Typically, students should be admitted to TC following the third semester (usually fall, sophomore year).  Please make sure you are working to complete all requirements for TC.  That means if you haven't passed the PPST, you need to schedule it ASAP (www.ets.org/praxis).
    • DECISION POINT 3, Admission to Student Teaching.  Admission to student teaching is contingent on meeting the requirements listed in this area.  The application to student teaching is due the fall semester of the school year prior to your student teaching.  Student teaching generally takes place the 7th semester.
    • DECISION POINT 4, Graduation and Licensing.
  • Avoid, if possible, obviously busy times to make an appointment with your advisor.  Additionally, it is very important that you keep keep your appointments or call to cancel.
  • If you have not done so already, you'll want to start an advising folder to keep all your information organized.
  • It may be helpful to have your questions written for your appointment, so you're able to get all of them answered.
  • It is difficult to reach your advisor by phone.  Contacting your advisor through email is usually more successful.    It is important to be very detailed in your emails.  If you have more than a quick question, it is best to make an appointment.
  • Try to make an advising appointment at least once every semester.
  • Things are always changing.  It is best to get the most up-to-date information from your advisor.
  • Check your BSU email frequently.  Advisors send emails with upcoming information you may need.
