EPIC News Article:
EPIC's second year schools
Last modified on Oct 24

EPIC continued to grow during the spring months with more than 40 new teachers from three different districts participating in the professional development program.

Participating schools include the Centers for Inquiry and Key Learning Community from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), Anderson High School and Highland High School from Anderson Community School Coporation (ACSC), and St. Mary School in Muncie from the Lafayette Diocese Schools. Each of these facilities are part of Ball State University's (BSU) Professional Development Schools (PDS) Network.

The teachers participated in a series of three half-day workshops that began in February and continued through April. Because the new class of grant participants are located in different areas of Central Indiana, the EPIC team hosted two workshops each month--one in the Teachers College in Muncie on BSU's main campus and another at BSU's Meridian Center, a new facility in downtown Indianapolis.

The professional development programs included focused discussions and activities to help teachers reconstruct their curriculum with the EPIC model. The teachers were also introduced to rGrade and smartDESKTOP. These pieces of technology are designed to encourage better assessment and collaboration practices for teachers.

The EPIC teachers have composed units of instruction based on the training they received. These units include provisions for assessment and have been shared with other teachers via the EPIC Community at smartDESKTOP. Over the course of the summer months, teachers will continue improving their plans. The units will be taught in the Fall.
