ON-SCREEN EXPERTS

JEFF ARNETT
Director of Education and Visitor Programs, BBHOF
A lifelong baseball fan, Arnett coaches a daily lineup of education all-stars who host school visits, electronic field trips, videoconferences, teacher training and public programming. Jeff is a veteran classroom teacher and district-wide administrator with a baseball card full of curriculum development and community relations stats.

 
OZZIE SMITH
Education Ambassador, BBHOF
Ozzie Smith is known in baseball as "The Wizard" and the best defensive shortstop of all time. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996. He is currently the Hall of Fame's Education Ambassador. Ozzie retired from baseball in 1996 after playing 19 years in the major leagues, the first four years with the San Diego Padres and the final fifteen with the St. Louis Cardinals. His nickname describes the way he played shortstop: he performed magic with his glove and performed in the infield with amazing acrobatic agility.

 

PARTNER TEACHERS

JILL RENEE CHIODINI
Teacher, High Tech High International
Jill Renee Chiodini, a 30-year-old Virginia native, has called San Diego home for the past ten years. Jill moved to San Diego in 1995 in order to attend San Diego State University where she received her BA in English with an emphasis in American Literature. After receiving her teaching credential and Master's Degree, Jill spent 4 years teaching English to freshmen and sophomores at Helix Charter High School. In 2003, Jill left Helix to pursue a career at High Tech High, where she is still happily teaching freshmen Humanities, coaching cross country and advising the yearbook staff. In her free time, Jill enjoys training for half marathons, reading, traveling, going to the beach and spending time with her friends, family and her husband Jason. Jill also has a soft spot for animals and as a result has one dog, two cats, two rabbits, two lizards and a salt water aquarium full of corals and fish.

 
TED CUEVAS
Teacher, High Tech High International
Ted Cuevas, a San Diego native, has been a teacher of Science and Mathematics for 9 years. Ted graduated UC San Diego in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Philosophy. After graduating college, Ted hitchhiked through Central America and lived and worked at an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico. After three years as a Mechanical Engineer, he kept thinking of his work with young people and decided to become a teacher. Ted now teaches Physics and Mathematics on a team of fifty ninth graders at High Tech High International and co-advises the school’s ASB. Next year, Ted will begin a new chapter of his educational career as Director of a new High Tech High school in San Diego, High Tech High Media Arts. Besides his love of teaching, Ted enjoys playing with his children, 5 year old Sophia and 2 year old Diego. If Ted finds time to do things for himself, he enjoys reading, lifting weights, traveling, being with his wonderful wife Jill, and watching good movies.

 
IAN EGGLESTON
Teacher, High Tech High International
Ian Eggleston is currently a teacher at High Tech High International, where he teaches 9th grade humanities. Originally from England, Ian moved to Indiana to study at the University of Evansville, where he spent the next four years. After completing his M.A in Counseling and Student Services at the University of San Diego, Ian returned to England where he was the Dean of Students at Harlaxton College. As a first year high school teacher at HTHI, Ian thoroughly enjoys the project based approach to learning and the benefits of teaching a diverse student body. Along with teaching humanities, Ian also advises the school's Model United Nations club and coaches soccer. In his spare time he can be found playing any one of a number of sports, enjoying the San Diego music and theater scene, spending quality webcam time with his family in England, or grading!

 
ANDY MAGNESS
Teacher, High Tech High International
Andy Magness is a second year Math and Physics teacher at High Tech High international. Growing up as an Air Force brat, he is really a native of nowhere, having spent his youth in Virginia, Alabama, Texas, Japan, and Alaska. He attended the University of Oklahoma as a National Merit Scholar and graduated with a BS in Physics in 1998. After College Andy moved to sunny San Diego where he worked as a tutor part time. He lived in a 1979 Volkswagon van and spent the balance of his days learning how to surf, practicing yoga, and honing his skills as an alpinist. In 2001, while visiting his parents (in North Dakota) he met and married his wife, Tammy. After an extended honeymoon in New Zealand, they decided it was time to settle down and headed back to San Diego where Andy got a full time teaching job in 2003. In his free time he's still practicing yoga, surfing, and climbing, and has recently added 'preparing for the upcoming challenges of fatherhood' to the list.

 
WILL TURNER
Teacher, High Tech High International
Will Turner has been teaching at High Tech High and High Tech High International for four years.  Currently Will serves as the World Music and Speech and Debate teacher for HTHI.  Will especially enjoyed working on the baseball documentary project associated with the baseball EFT, and hopes that the documentary curriculum he developed helps other teachers make documentaries in their classrooms.  Before teaching at HTHI, Will completed his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia and earned a masters degree in international relations from UC San Diego.  Somewhere in between, he taught English in Japan for three years.  The baseball EFT has been a fantastic experience for Will, and he hopes that teachers around the country have as much fun learning about 19th century as he and his students did!

 

STUDENT HOSTS

MONIQUE MARIE FLEMING
Freshman, High Tech High International
Monique Marie Fleming is a 15-year-old freshman at High Tech High International. Before attending High Tech High International, she went to the Waldorf School of San Diego. Monique has a bi-national, bicultural, bilingual lifestyle because her father is an Anglo American and her mother is from Mexico. Monique recently celebrated her Quiceañera, a traditional Mexican coming of age rite for girls. Besides being a dedicated student, Monique has also played softball since she was 9 years old, and during the 2004 season was honored to be chosen to be on the all-star team, which made it to the state finals. In addition, Monique also enjoys spending time with her friends and family and likes to experience new things such as ethnic foods, languages, sports, music, and travel. Some of her goals for the future include learning to speak Japanese, learning to cook the cuisine of other countries, and learning how to play tennis.

 
QUIN HERRON
Freshman, High Tech High International
Quin Herron hails from San Diego, California, after being born in Texas, and is a freshman at High Tech High International. Quin is a computer fan as much as he is a baseball fan. He also listens to Irish music and plays video/computer games. He enjoys listening to and playing music and is currently learning how to play Irish flute. He has one brother, one sister and two dogs; one named Charger (after the San Diego football team) and another named Zoe. He really likes acting and can’t wait to one day be on TV.

 
JOSH JONES
Freshman, High Tech High International
Josh Jones is a fourteen year old student at High Tech High International. Josh was born and raised in San Diego, where he lives with his mom, dad, brother, sister and dog. Josh was the star of a few school plays at his previous school St. Didicus. He has also performed as the lead role in the play Nick Tickle The Fairy Tale Detective, and starred in a set of shorts for a baseball project where he played Scoop Getter, a 19th Century news reporter. His dream job would be to be a stand up comic or work in the movie industry. He enjoys hanging out with friends, reading, and watching films.

 
  TUYAYMYA (TUY) OSUNA
Freshman, High Tech High International
Tuyaymya (Tuy) Osuna is a 14 year old freshman at High Tech High International. In Spanish Tuy’s means yours and mine. Tuy’s family has a Mexican background and she speaks fluent Spanish and English. She is also currently learning both French and Mandarin. During the 2nd semester of high school Tuy transferred to High Tech High International from Marian Catholic High School where she was voted ASB Freshman President. Tuy enjoys politics and continues to serve in the ASB at High Tech High International, where she enjoys the role of Senator and also serves in the Social Committee. Aside from being a hard working and dedicated student, Tuy enjoy trips and watching movies at home with her family, especially her puppy, Rocco. She also enjoys going to the movies and mall and spending time with her friends. Tuy’s other hobbies include dancing, playing basketball, volleyball and figure skating. Her favorite color is pink and I love chocolate.
 
ANNIE SCHNEIDER
Freshman, High Tech High International
Annie Schneider is a 14 year old freshman at High Tech High International. She has lived in San Diego her whole life, and in the same house with her brother, mother, and father for almost fifteen years. Annie’s main hobbies include drawing, writing, attending karate, and reading. She enjoys listening to music of all genres excepting emo and pop-punk, two words which she believed should never be used in the same sentence. She has joined different clubs such as karate, Model United Nations, builders club, and baby-sits three times a week. Annie hopes to attend Stanford University, a renowned law and medical school located in Northern California, a short car ride from San Francisco.

 
LOUIS D. WARD III
Freshman, High Tech High International
On November 20, 1990, Louis D. Ward III was born to his wonderful parents, Lou and Adriane Ward. He is now fourteen years old and lives in the beautiful city of sunny San Diego, California. He lives with his mom, dad, and older sister. He has grown up around baseball and still loves baseball today. His dad, and his grandfather all played baseball, so naturally Louis feels drawn to it. Louis’ family is what he would say, keeps him strong. They are his support and whenever Louis is with them he is always learning things. Louis says that his dad is where he gets all of his public speaking skills from. In his free time he likes to play video games, go on the computer, and hang out with his friends. Baseball has always been there for Louis Ward. He believes it is a great way to meet people, get a lot of exercise, and have fun.
