Multiculturalism is a basic characteristic of United States society. The minor requires 15 credit hours which consist of the following:

• Specialized or elective courses offered in many major departments
• Courses designed by the Department of Educational Studies
• Immersive experiences in communities, social and professional organizations, and educational settings

Below are the descriptions for the required courses:

EDMUL 205: Introduction to Multicultural Education
This course examines social factors that affect teacher decision-making and student achievment in United States schools.It also addresses the need for intercultural competence, culturally informed instructional strategies, promotion of social justice, and reduction of racism and sexism in order to create a democratic classroom.

EDMUL 206: Advanced Study of Ethnic and Multicultural Group Behavior
This course focuses on critical analyses of the concepts introduced in EDMUL 205. By studying specific cultural groups in relation to schooling, it develops an in-depth understanding of the impact culture has on the process of teaching and learning.This course also addresses the needs for intercultural competence, culturally sensitive instruction, and prejudice reduction.

EDMUL 302: Social Construction of Identity
This course examines the concept of identity from an interdisciplinary perspective.Students will develop a coherent theoretical understanding of how, and to what extent, identities are socially constructed, how they change, and the meanings that are ascribed to them.

EDMUL 303: Representation and Self-Representation
EDMUL 303 examines the relationship among race, class, gender, sexual identity, and representation through a variety of media and historical contexts.It also explores the role of technology and its potential to empower cultural groups and counter negative stereotypes.

EDMUL 400: Topical Seminar in Multicultural Studies
Each seminar focuses on a different topic in multiculturalism based on the faculty's member field of expertise. A total of 9 credits may be earned, but no more than 3 in any one semester or term.
