1.    The Department of Educational Leadership has been granting educational administration degrees for 74 years.  The Department was known as the Department of Educational Administration and Supervision until 1989.  Since 1989 the department has been called the Department of Educational Leadership.

2.     The Department has held a top 20 national ranking for its leadership development program for 4 straight years.  The national ranking is awarded by Executive Leadership Corporation in their monthly magazine Leadership Excellence.

3.    Department faculty have published in the following journals: Educational Administration Quarterly, Educational Leadership, Journal of Law and Education, Journal of School Business Management, Thresholds in Education, Brigham Young University Education and Law Journal, Educational Research Quarterly, Journal of Technology Studies, American School Board Journal, West's Education Law Reporter, Journal of Thought.

4.    Almost one-third of current Indiana Superintendents received their Ed.S. or Ed.D. degree through the Department's Ed.S. or Ed.D. degree program.  This makes Ball State the State leader.

5.    More than 18% (348) of current Indiana principals received their license through the Department's masters or licensure program.

6.    The Department offers the M.A.E. and Ed.D. in educational administration and supervision and the Ed.S. in School Superintendency.

7.    The Department offers its entire master's degree program online.

8.    Most educational administration majors are part-time students.  The Department's largest enrollment occurs in the summer.  The Department has approximately 500 enrollments in its summer 2009 courses.

9.    The Department has approximately 570 current master's degree students and approximately 100 licensure-only students.  There are 90 current pending masters' applications.

10.   The Department awarded 126 master's degrees from Fall 2008 through Summer 2009.

11.   The Department has the largest off-campus distance education master's degree program at Ball State University.

12.   The Department had the highest number of admissions (201) of all Ball State University master's degree programs this year.

13.   The Department has 61 students in the Ed.D. program and is one of the largest doctoral programs on campus.

14.   The Department has 62 student enrolled in the Ed.S. program.  This is the largest Ed.S. program at Ball State University.

15.  The Department has been approved by the Indiana Higher Education Commission to offer its Ed.S. and Ed.D. programs online.

16.   The Department has 5 graduate assistants.

17.   The Department sponsor 4 Study Councils made up of 120 public school superintendents across Indiana (approximately 24% of all Indiana school corporations).

18.   The Department's principal and superintendent internship program is very intensive and is a "national model."  Intern enrollment has grown from 159 (2005) to 263 (2009).

19.   The Department participates in the superintendent search process with the other major state universities in assisting school corporations' select superintendents.

20.   The Department has 6 fulltime faculty members, 6 adjunct professors and an administrative coordinator.

Scholarship
Dr. McKinney has presented his research on random student drug testing programs at several drug testing summits sponsored by the White House, Office of Drug Control Policy

  • Dr. McKinney's research was cited in the White House publication National Drug Control Strategy which is sent to the Congress of the United States and widely distributed throughout the country.  His work was also cited in Drug Testing in Schools, published by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
  • Dr. Sharp and Dr. McKinney have both won the Teachers College Research Award.

Service

  • Four department-sponsored superintendent study councils across the state serve to improve education in approximately 120 member school corporations.
  • Two faculty members have assisted in Ball State University Charter School Selection.
  • Faculty are consultants to numerous school boards.
  • Faculty has assisted with the Evaluation of Ball State Charter Schools.

Honors and Awards

  • Eugene White who earned his Ed.D. from the Department and is the superintendent of MSD of Washington township, was recently elected president of AASA nationally.
  • John T. Coopman who earned his Ed.D. from the Department is serving as the president of the Indiana Association of  Public School Superintendents.

Partnerships

  • The Department is partnering with the Department of Journalism in teaching the "national model" master's level course in educational leadership via the internet called "School Administrators and the First Amendment"
  • The Department has offered a live license renewal course for the Indianapolis area called "Residential Leadership Series".  A series of seminars held on 6 Saturdays during the academic year.  this course is offered at the BSU downtown Indianapolis site.
