Transition Information
The links listed below provide valuable information for students with disabilities and their parents. The high school to college transition is a difficult one for all students, but it can be especially difficult for students with disabilities.  There are several important differences between high school disability services and college disability services.  Please click on the links below to learn more about the high school to college transition.

High School to College Transition- This page features a table that compares aspects of high school such as teachers, attendance policies, homework, tests, and grades with these aspects as they pertain to college. 

Secondary vs. Postsecondary Education- This easy to read chart outlines the differences in the laws that govern secondary and postsecondary education.  This chart also outlines where responsibility lies (with the student or with the college) on certain issues relative to disability such as identification, assessment, programming, advocacy, decision making, and transition planning.

Transition into Postsecondary Education- This is a link to the Office for Civil Rights webpage and it provides information about students' rights and responsibilities as they tranisition from high school to college.  This document provides answers to frequently asked questions about disclosing a disability in college and obtaining accommodations for college classes.

Information for Parents about College- This link to the Office for Civil Rights webpage provides information for parents of high school students about college.  The page details what parents should do prior to their child's admission to college and after their child's admission to college.  This information is valuable to parents as they assist their children in the process of transitioning from high school to college.

Information for High School Educators- This link to the Office for Civil Rights webpage provides information for high school teachers about college.  This article includes transition information as well as answers to frequently asked questions about the college admissions process, documention and disclosing a disability, as well as how the student obtains services for a disability at college.

Faculty Mentorship Program-The Faculty Mentorship Program is a program specifically designed for first year students with disabilities.  This program is a collaborative effort between DSD, the faculty members of Ball State, and the Learning Center.  The goal of the FMP is to enhance the learning experience for students with disabilities by assigning faculty mentors to each student participating in the program.
