Parking/Transportation
Ball State University offers the following help to students with disabilities in the areas of parking and transportation. Further information can be found at the Parking Services website: Parking Services Home.

Permits: Permits may be given to students with disabilities who cannot get to their classes or work site without specialized parking opportunities. Spaces are limited, so please consider your needs carefully when applying for these permits.

Regular Disabled Parking Permits allow the holder to park at all designated accessible parking spaces (signs with international access symbol) as well as in whichever parking zones your permit allows. You should apply for a disabled parking placard or a disabled registration plate from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Take the certification that comes with the placard (to verify that it was indeed issued to you) or the license plate registration, along with your Ball State Identification Card to the BSU Office of Parking Services for the issuance of a Ball State Disabled Parking Permit.

A Medical Temporary Parking Permit is issued for a period of time not to exceed one semester. It enables a person with a temporary mobility impairment to park in any blue disabled parking space. The Health Center, Office of Parking Services, or Disabled Student Development may approve the issuance of this permit.

A Special # 97 Parking Permit is given to students with more severe disabilities. For more information on this permit and an application, contact the Disabled Student Development office.

Campus Shuttle Bus Service: The BSU Campus Shuttle Bus operates daily during the academic school year (August - May) from 7:15 a.m. to 12:00 midnight Monday through Thursday and from 7:15 a.m. - 7:00 p.m on Friday. On Sunday, the shuttle runs from 3:00-11:30 p.m. with limited service. It is available to students, faculty, staff and visitors free of charge. The current plan provides transit availability every 6 to 10 minutes along McKinley Avenue. The Shuttle bus stops only at designated points.

Accessible Shuttle for Students with Disabilities: A lift-equipped campus shuttle runs Monday through Thursday 7:15 a.m to 12:00 midnight and Friday 7:15 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sundays 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. during the regular academic year for those with mobility impairments. Call the Transportation Office (285-9045) from 7:00 a.m. - 11:45 p.m. to request a pick-up and to designate a location. The shuttle does not go off campus. Please call at least one hour prior to the desired pick-up time and please be patient, particularly in times of heavy use and inclement weather. This service is also very useful, particularly in bad weather, for students who are blind or have visual impairments. The DSD Office establishes the eligibility list for this service.

Charlie's Charter: Charlie's Charter offers students a free ride from one campus location to another.  This service is available to students Sunday through Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 3:30 a.m. Call 285-5005 for a pick up. If you need assistance relative to your disability, you will need to state this when you call. If you are a wheelchair user, be sure to request a lift-equipped van when you call.  More information about Charlie's Charter can be found by clicking here: Charlie's Charter

Off-Campus Transportation: Accessible transportation is provided off campus by Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS). Most MITS buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and securement devices. Each bus has space for two wheelchairs. The phone number is 289-6487. MITS Plus is a wheelchair accessible van that serves clients in situations when the lift equipped busses cannot be used. Arrangements for MITS Plus must be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance. You must be certified to use MITS Plus or to obtain a half price fare. The DSD office has all the necessary forms and can certify disability. The phone number is 284-4753. Personal care attendants can ride for free.
