John and Janice Fisher Distinguished Professor of Wellness and Gerontology

David Haber
David Haber is nationally recognized for his teaching and research. In 2000 he received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education. His textbook, Health Promotion and Aging: Implications for the Health Professions, is one of the most popular textbooks in the field. His third edition is underway.

Accomplishments

  • Serves as associate director of the John and Janice Institute for Wellness and Gerontology.
  • Was a professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Gerontology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
  • Served as the director of the Creighton Center for Healthy Aging in Omaha, Nebraska, as well as associate professor and program coordinator at the Institute of Gerontology in Washington, D.C.
  • Is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America.
  • Received Best Practice awards from the Health Promotion Institute in 1999 and 2001.
  • Received the Molly Mettler Health Promotion and Aging Award from the National Council on Aging.
  • Authored or co-authored over 70 articles and book chapters.
  • Serves on the editorial advisory board of Family and Community Health.
  • Has been the author and principal investigator or project director for 20 major grants related to health and aging. His teaching experience includes social gerontology, community health, and disease prevention/health promotion as well as interdisciplinary wellness research design.


Education

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Cincinnati.
  • Ph.D. in sociology from the Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
