Insurance Education Institute for High School and Middle School Teachers
Ball State University is proud to serve as a host for the 2008 Insurance Education Institute for high school teachers. The program is funded by grants from the Insurance Education Foundation (IEF). IEF is a non-profit charitable organization located in Indianapolis, Indiana, whose goal is to improve the understanding of insurance and its role in society through the education of teachers and students.

Scholarships. IEF provides funds to cover the costs of graduate credit, on-campus room and board, and educational materials for those who are selected to attend the Institute. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses.  

Graduate Credit. Three graduate credit hours are awarded at no cost to you for successful completion of the program. To inquire if the credit may be used toward your teaching license renewal, contact the Ball State Office of Teacher Education Services at 1-800-382-8540 or e-mail Jane Thomas at jthomas@bsu.edu.

Eligibility. The program is open to the first 35 qualified participants. To be eligible, applicants must be teaching a course leading to a high school diploma that contains insurance education. Teachers, grades 6-12, in the following and related disciplines are encouraged to apply: business, driver's education, economics, health, mathematics, and family and consumer sciences.Participants must also be admitted to the Graduate School.

Tentative Schedule
The program will be taught using a blended-learning approach that will include online and on-campus components. The Internet-based assignments will consist of completing the study guide assignments, reviewing PowerPoint presentations, completing online quizzes, and completing Web-based exercises over select chapters. John C. Etling Scholarship Award. The goal for this awards program is to motivate teachers to place a high priority on insurance education for their students in the years to come.  The plan for awarding these scholarships involves the institute programs of the Insurance Education Institute in a very positive way. 

IEI will award $750 to a teacher who achieves the highest degree of excellence in the course.  The institute will also send the school where the winner teaches a check for $250 with the stipulation that it be spend on materials or equipment of the teacher's choice in his/her department.

The John C. Etling Scholarship Award will be presented by representatives from the Institute during the concluding "graduation" function of each institute.  A photograph and press release will be sent to the winning teacher's hometown media.
