Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do these courses work?
A. These are term-based Internet classes that appear in Blackboard with specific start and end dates. The instructor will have homework assignments posted with specific due dates. The instructors are also teaching parallel section of the course on-campus. You can view the lectures live, while they are occurring on campus or view the archived lecture later in the day. If you want to know more about a specific course, you can e-mail the instructor to inquire.

Q. How and when do I view the lectures?
A. Your instructor will post a link in their Blackboard course that will connect you to the Web site where the lectures are housed.

Q. Are these courses part of the Independent Learning Program?

A. NO. The summer Internet classes are not part of the Independent Learning Program. They are similar, but these are term-based Internet courses with specific start and end dates. Independent learning enrollments can start and end at anytime.

Instructors for the summer Internet courses will have homework assignments with specific due dates. They are also teaching the same course on-campus and taping their lectures and then posting the lectures on their web site so you can view them as an Internet student. You may also view the lectures live, while they are occurring on-campus. You can register for these summer Internet classes at www.bsu.edu/distance/schedule, click Course Registration Form, then select the Distance Education Program option.

We also offer about 100 courses through the Independent Learning Program. They offer many of these same classes through that program too. You can sign up and start independent learning courses anytime during the year and you select either 9-month and/or 10-week courses. Your time begins when the course is paid. You can register for Independent Learning courses at www.bsu.edu/distance/independentselect the Course Registration Form, then select either the 9-month or 10-week Independent Learning option.

Q. Do I need to come to campus for any part of this Internet course?
A. No. All work and examinations are completed via the Internet.

Q. Will these courses apply toward my financial aid?
A. These courses count just like on-campus courses do. So you could apply them toward your financial aid. To inquire about getting financial aid to pay for these courses, you can call the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at 1-800-227-4017 or 765-285-5600 or e-mail finaid@bsu.edu. When talking with financial aid, make sure to tell them that these classes are not part of the Independent Learning Program. They are term-based Internet classes with specific start and end dates.

Q. How will these courses appear on my records? Do they count toward my GPA?
A. These are regular Ball State courses that earn residence credit just like on-campus courses do. They appear on your DAPR, and on your transcripts when you complete them. They also look the same as your on-campus courses on your transcript. They are also figured into your GPA.

Q. Can I take one of these classes as a "repeat"
A. Yes. If you plan to take one of the summer Internet classes as a "repeat," please make sure to e-mail distance@bsu.edu to remind the staff that the course you just registered for is a "repeat" class. That way the course is entered into our registration system correctly.

Q. When do I pay?
A.
Students may pay tuition online during the registration process using Visa, Mastercard, or an e-check or wait for an electronic bill. Fees are due before the first day of the term or when billed by the bursar's office.On-campus tuition and other fees, such as late fees or installment fees or tuition for a previous term, cannot be paid by credit card. Learn more at www.bsu.edu/distance/tuition.

Q. Why are these classes cheaper than on-campus classes?
A. When you take a distance education class, you pay for tuition only. On-campus students pay a dedicated student fee that pays for extra services and privileges (recreational facilities, labs, sporting events, Emens). Distance education students are usually not on-campus so they are not accessed these fees nor do they have access.

A.
To register for these Internet courses, you go to www.bsu.edu/distance/schedule. Click the link that says "Course Registration Form." Then you will select the Distance Education Program option. You can't register for the distance education classes through the Add/Drop/Registration page that you use for on-campus classes.
