Dr. Fritz Dolak, Copyright and Intellectual Property Manager, procures copyright clearances for all forms of distributed learning on campus and acts as Ball State University’s clearinghouse for answers related to intellectual property and copyright. Fritz’s involvement in the State of Indiana’s copyright concerns includes being invited in 1997 to be a member of the Washington, D. C. Instructional Telecommunications Council investigation of fair use practices under Section 110(2) of the Copyright Act. Further, he has been the Chair of the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education's Copyright Committee for the past six years, and as Chair, was invited to provide Federal testimony in 1999 for the U.S. Register of Copyrights’ “Report on Copyright and Digital Distance Education.” Fritz’ intellectual property involvement at Ball State University consists of being on the committee that created the Ball State University Copyright Compliance Document, and in 1998 he created and implemented an Internet copyright home page which, in 2004, has evolved into the University Copyright Office Home Page: http://www.bsu.edu/library/collections/copyright/ . In 2004, Fritz was the Chair of the University Libraries’ conference, “Practical Copyright 2004: What you need to know!” A follow-up copyright program entitled, “CopyRights and CopyWrongs for All Librarians,” is in the planning stages for April 2005: www.bsu.edu/library/conference with Fritz acting again as Conference Chair. He has served on the Distance Education Planning Committee since 1995 and is currently a member of the Ball State Copyright and Patent Committee. This past year he has been named as a Research Fellow for the Ball State University Digital Policy Institute: www.bsu.edu/digitalpolicy. Besides giving numerous copyright and intellectual property presentations at Ball State and throughout Indiana, Fritz has given copyright workshops and presentations throughout the country including Washington, D.C., California, Texas, Arkansas, New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado and Oregon.
