“Ideate” is a term from the design professions which means to come up with ideas. Designers ideate when they are brainstorming on solutions for problems (e.g “How so we make cameras and training available to students in EDEL 350 for their practicum lesson?”). Similarly, one can ideate on opportunities for a given context (e.g “How might we increase the amount of videography in teacher education?”). We’re borrowing this term from the design professions as a play on the IDEA acronym.

Types of apprenticeships

IDEA is structured to provide different kinds of models for immersive learning projects, in addition to open-ended project Challenges. The following list shows the basic ready-made project ideas as (sorted by classroom experience and technical depth):
  1. Resource Development involves the development of a content for teaching, learning, or training. It can be print-based, web based, app based, DVD, or other format, depending on the needs of the client. This project type requires technical skills but does not require any direct teaching or training.
  2. A Technology Demonstration is a 20-30 minute introduction of a new technology for an identified audience. This requires a little research, some content development, and just a little teaching in the form of a concise presentation geared for the audience/client. The CTE frequently hosts demonstrations in the iStudio or as requested by faculty in the College.
  3. A Reciprocal Apprenticeship (RA) is a type of apprenticeship in which the mentor and the apprentice collaborate in to provide the experience that the other lacks. In other words, during the course of an RA, the mentor is at times an apprentice and an apprentice is at times a mentor. The RS requires a web exhibit to be completed.

The other type of apprenticeship is an IDEA Challenge, which is an open-ended project of significant depth that might be proposed by a school or outside client. These projects require a proposal from a team of apprentices, a mentor, and a representative from the CTE Staff. Examples might include: A workshop (beyond a demonstration), development of a technology plan, design of more learning content, a grant, or implementation of a new technology in a school setting. Some challenges might involved paid responsibilities for the apprentices in which case the work can not be counted as a course project.

Portfolio
All projects will result in a portfolio artifact that the apprentices must align to NET_T and other frameworks. The RA, Workshop, and Challenge require a full web exhibit to document the project.

In the IDEA forums, there are three things you can do in the Ideate phase:
  1. Select a ready-made project idea than can be completed with a willing client or mentor. In theses cases, clients, mentors and apprentices can examine some ideas and make the connection with each other to take them on.
  2. Propose a plan for a Challenge already posted by an IDEA client, mentor, or sponsor. A template for proposals is provided in the online community.
  3. Propose a new project Challenge using the online form in the IDEA Community.
