An apprenticeship is fundamentally an immersive learning experience. IDEA supports the Ball State’s immersive learning initiative in many ways (see separate page). But, as a longitudinal apprenticeship, students are supported across courses and faculty. The CTE and the IDEA program serve to anchor the experience over time and across different academic programs, as a complement to each student’s academic program.
In this context, an apprenticeship is a less formal structure designed to let students engage when they want and leave should they choose to. It is almost like a student club, in that it is extra-curricular (i.e. not required in any academic program) yet contributes to the student’s professional growth.
