Options for the CS Major

All computer science majors must choose either the Computer Science Option or the Information Systems Option. The required courses are the primary difference between each option. However, you can choose the required courses of one option as electives in the other. This allows students to customize their computer science education to become experts in the aspects that most interest them.

The Computer Science Option is the default option for new majors. A student who wishes to change options should meet with his or her academic advisor.

Changes in undergraduate programs
The department is always reviewing and revising the computer science curriculum based on industry trends, student feedback, and educational research. However, this means that current students may find themselves stuck in the middle of a program change.

If you started in an option of the major that is no longer offered, such as the Hardware Option, you may stay in that option and graduate as normal. In the event that some of the courses for that option are no longer offered or have undergone fundamental changes, you should talk with the Director of Undergraduate Programs to arrange appropriate substitutions.

However, you are not required to stay with your original option of the major: you may switch to one of the new or revised options. As always, consult your academic advisor for more details.
