BSU Student Organizations Receive Social Activist Awards
The Ball State University Center for Peace and Conflict Studies presented Social Activist Awards to two student organizations for successful non-violent demonstrations that resulted in meaningful public dialog and off-campus media attention. The Black Student Association, which held a "silent sit-in" in the Arts and Journalism Atrium bringing public awareness to unfair coverage of Diversity events in the Ball State Daily News, was featured in a cover story in the Muncie Star and a news spot on Channel 6 news in Indianapolis. PeaceWorkers, a newly formed student group dedicated to peace activism, held a peace march and "teach-in" on the US-Iragi Crisis which received coverage in the Indianapolis Star as well as on the cover of the Ball State Daily News.
Accepting the Social Activist Awards for the Black Student Association was its current president Michelle Hudson. Student leaders Jon Hendricks, Nicole Wick, Carmen Siering, Tony Piazza and Yolanda Collins accepted the award for PeaceWorkers.
