Admission to the master's degree programs is extremely competitive. Enrollment is limited to 40-50 graduate students per year.
Candidates must be admitted by the Graduate School before the department can recommend admission into the program. Admission by the Graduate School does not guarantee admission into the program.
Department Requirements
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. In addition to the specific program requirements listed below, applicants should have
- Combined GRE (verbal and quantitative) scores of at least 1000.
- Counseling or volunteer experience
- Research experience (e.g., publications, honor's thesis, professional presentations, or research assistant)
- Three letters of recommendation
Requirements for MA in Counseling, Mental Health, Community, and Vocational Rehabilitation and MA in Social Psychology, All Tracks
- Completion of at least 15 semester hours or 24 quarter hours of undergraduate psychology courses (educational, social, counseling, or general psychology courses are acceptable)
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0 in these courses
Requirements for MA in Counseling, School Track
- Valid teaching license or completion of 15 semester hours or 24 quarter hours of undergraduate psychology courses (educational, social, counseling, or general psychology courses are acceptable)
- Overall GPA of 3.0 in these courses
School Counseling Track for Master's Degree Holders
Candidates who already have master's degrees in counseling from Ball State University may pursue course work to become eligible for the standard school-services license. This determination will be made by the school counseling program director. Send a letter of request and a transcript to the program director. Additional course work and experience may be necessary to meet the equivalency of the departmental master's program in school counseling.
