Content Management
Best practices for page titles
The title is the part of the page that shows up in the title bar of your Web browser. It is used as the link in Google search results. Page titles are a very important factor in determining search results on Google and other search engines.

Here are some tips to help you create page titles:

  • Page titles should go from specific to general. For example:
    • Graduate Programs, Biology Department, Ball State University
    • Scholarships, Financial Aid, Ball State University
    • Transfer Students, Undergraduate Admissions, Ball State University
    • Transfer Students, Graduate Admissions, Ball State University

  • For Google optimization, page titles should be no longer than 65 characters (including spaces).

  • Page titles should include one or more targeted keywords.

  • When appropriate, page titles can be a call-to-action. For example:
    • Apply to Ball State University
    • Sign up for the newsletter from X Department
  • Do NOT use the abbreviation BSU. The Web reaches the world, and people across the country or world may not be familiar with what "BSU" means. Plus, Ball State is not the only university or organization to use this abbrviation.
