A Book of Charms

From the Introduction: Charms traditionally were used for very practical purposes....Often they accompanied communal or personal rituals, and each charm could be validated by telling a myth that explained its origin and power and by reciting its successes....Charms also could herald changes that could be felt to be taking place with the natural exhileration of the cycling seasons; and like the practitioners of the old religion, the authors of the poems in this book write in order to record and celebrate experiences of the deity in nature. In their psychology of the charm poem, these poets think in the traditional terms of concentration upon a thing, problem, or person, in order to bring about a change of circumstance or attitude. They intend to help people, somewhat in the way a soothsayer would, by healing and by intuitively foretelling states of mind that are about to come.
