Over the past few years, the Department of Chemistry has grown to nearly 160 majors (nearly 50% are women) with 17 full-time faculty. We currently have ten graduate student assistantships populated by Masters students in Chemistry or Chemical Education or by students in our newly formed Ed.D. in Science/Science Education program.
This year we will graduate 30 undergraduate students. This places us as one of the top producers of undergraduate chemists out of over 600 institutions that grant bachelor's degrees in chemistry.
Independent research experiences give our students an important edge when applying for various positions, and we have recently increased our educational opportunities by expanding our summer research program to include 60 undergraduates and 16 faculty. In this 31st year of the summer program several of the students are sophomores and juniors, and many of them will perform one, two, or three years of hands-on research with a faculty research advisor by the time they graduate.
We actively recruit chemical companies to visit Ball State University and discover the wealth of talent possessed by our majors, and many students find excellent industrial internship and full-time positions. In addition, increasing numbers of graduates are accepted to outstanding graduate, medical, or dental schools.
It is our overall goal to maintain and improve our programs, increasing the future successes of students and faculty.
Sincerely,
Professor and Chair
