IDEE Fosters Immersive Learning, Digital Technology
by Rodger W. Smith

The Institute for Digital Entertainment and Education (IDEE) was established as a result of a Lilly Foundation grant as a best practice institute charged with expanding immersive educational experiences by:

  • building learning labs and studios that connect digital media professionals and students through remote technologies;
  • developing partnerships with digital industry that give students "real world" insights into current trends; and
  • promoting an industry model that facilitates educational and industry partnerships, allowing both entities to remain at the edge of technological advancement and best practices.

IDEE understands its role within the university to be that of a convener; bringing people and technologies together to create opportunities and add value to previously established educational and industry capabilities.  It serves as a production house, or quasi-studio, where artistic content and products created from developing technologies are emphasized.  IDEE views the understanding of "story" as the heart of its work.  Story is thought of as the author of how technology develops new pathways to answer societies entertainment and educational needs.

IDEE has been existence little more than a year.  In that time it has:

  • created a pilot program (DEOP) with the Department of Theatre & Dance to better understand how new technologies can be used both in education and for creating new media products;
  • won a Central Indiana Community Foundation grant to develop two digital story models about Indianapolis's Cultural Trail.  This grant is the first step to developing for Ball States' Indy Center a series of digital community dashboards that provide visitors and residents an inside look at Indianapolis;
  • begun to create a juvenile justice interactive training product that helps the Indiana judicial system better understand and process juveniles through the court system with the utmost attention to fairness and responsible decision-making;
  • created a number of digital products for the classroom; such as an interactive group communications DVD, a digital Introduction to Theatre styled text, and is currently working with faculty to create visual versions of a number of case studies in the field of psychology;
  • initiated the creation of iBall.  iBall is a developing web portal humorously described as YouTube meets MySpace in an iTunes-like environment.

IDEE's goal is to become a leader for BSU's immersive learning and new technology ambitions and help establish BSU as a nationally recognized university for digital technology research and application. Through its work and partnerships with media industry leaders in Indianapolis and Los Angeles, it is able to provide immersive student-learning experiences that add value to education.  IDEE's entertainment focus on creating traditional and new media content for movies, television, iPod, net, and cell phone platforms allow its students experience with multiple technologies.  IDEE's use of media in education makes it an invaluable contributor to the world of digital publishing.  As well, IDEE's commitment to creating educational products that are in tune with developing pedagogies place the institute at the cutting edge of technology in education.
