Folegandros. Cycladic island to the west of Santorini (Thira) This is a "dry island" which imports all of its water for human consumption via the sea from other islands. These slides are the "chora" or main town up the hill from the small port, situated on the cliffs looking to the north for defensive purposes. In the town is the oldest area, the "Kastro" or castle which is walled off from the rest of the village and has entries through the "wall" made of buildings. Climate = hot dry summer, cold dry winter. Little pain. Slide #: 083 Author ID: 1 SBSE Slide ID: CD011-083-S002-001 Title: Folegandros Comments: General view of the village perched on the cliff. Mountain village near Delphi. Climate is warm dry summers and snowy winters. Stone buildings with clay tile roofs. Narrow streets, most pedestrian with steps up the mountain. Amorgos. Another Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea, the island is very dry (but I don't think it imports H2O). The Chora, or main village, is up in the hills, quite far from the port for defensive reasons. The architecture is Corbusiere's classic white Mediterranean boxes. The town has no streets which accomodate vehicles - all are narrow and fairly steep. In the "center" of the village, more or less, is a set of wide streets which make the plazas or city squares in which you find restaurants, bank, telephone, coffee shops and trees. The houses each have their own courtyards, usually shaded with an arbor or bamboo device of some sort. A Saronic island, just off the west coast of the Peloponisus (Pelopenesean) penninsula and south of Athens in the Saronic Gulf. Hydra is a completely dry island and imports all of its water. It has a long history of shipping and providing sea captains and has a prosperous history. Houses now sell to tourists for $100,000+ and gold shops are all over the main street in the port. No vehicle streets - very narrow stepped streets go up the hills from the very active waterfront. The village of Hydra faces due north: which makes for nice sunsets in June, but the view and the sun are usually at odds. See: Hydra - a book by ?????? which studies the "urban design" and physical history of the village - very nice. Santorini or Thira. Perhaps the most famous Cycladic island, this lies north of Crete in the center of the Aegean and is the result of a round island that had a volcano explode and leave a crescent. These slides are the village of Oia (ee-ya) perched on the cliffs of the caldera on the tip of Thira. This town housed sea captains who built quite elegant homes on the cliffs. Again the island is dry, imports H2O. The buildings are made with a vault construction that supports the flat roofs which are used as terraces and exterior rooms.
