Bridging the culture and practices that support the environmental commitment of colleges and universities.

About
Greening of the
Campus
Extending Connections
Ball State University’s 2005 Greening of the Campus conference is the sixth in a series dating from 1996. The theme for this event is “Extending Connections.”

Once again we seek to host paper, poster, and workshop presentations that illustrate the important role colleges and universities play in cultivating the awareness, understanding, and/or ability of students, faculty, professional staff, and their many public constituencies to
enhance the health, integrity, and long-term sustainability of the places where they live and work.

Colleges and universities are uniquely suited to address the complexities of sustainability as an intergenerational economic, social, and
environmental equity. These institutions are transforming degree offerings, academic programs, and courses as they seek to respond to this complexity. The social, environmental, and economic factors are
also played out in the many research initiatives these institutions undertake. And these schools provide leadership through the
programs of outreach, community service, and public engagement that they sponsor.

Colleges and universities can serve as exemplars of best practices in the
management of their own use of resources and/or as influences on resource use in the communities of which they are a part.

This call for papers invites abstracts describing the many dimensions of “greening” under way at your institution–how your college or
university is engaging the complexities of economic, social, and environmental equity–as a community, in a community…extending
connections.

Overview
This interdisciplinary conference allows people representing diverse areas in university communities to share information on environmental issues. These areas range from the practical day-to-day management of the physical plant to “green” curriculum development and “green” utilization of campus resources. The areas are bound by common concerns for achieving environmental soundness through safe and sane management of resources. The campus community can become a “green” model for society as a whole by gathering and sharing this information.

Why Participate?
Participation in the conference can help you and your institution, company, or organization:
  • Understand the potential for university and college campuses to influence the environmental impact of campus resources.
  • Begin a strategy for viewing college and university campuses in a systems context.
  • Learn about emerging environmental curricula in a variety of disciplines.
  • Hear the latest developments in environmentally sound physical plant management techniques.
  • Identify ways to connect the campus to the community.

“Excellent conference. I always enjoy this conference more than any others that I attend.”
—2003 Participant

“Certainly this was an excellent gathering of people facing very similar issues.”

Vital Link
Our society needs ideas and actions that enhance the environmental health and integrity of the places where we live and work. Educational institutions are complex human communities that pose unique opportunities to explore, understand, and respond to the interrelationship of environmental issues. College and university campuses can be a vital link bridging current community needs and understandings with future visions.

“Greening” directly influences every aspect of human culture.  It impacts economic, political, technical, philosophical, and cognitive practices in a complex interweaving of ideas and actions.

Management of environmental resources on college and university campuses can have long-term effects on the institutions themselves and on society as a whole. This is a unique opportunity to share effective ideas on environmental issues.

Extending Connections Activities:

Tour of the Cardinal Greenway

The Cardinal Greenway is the longest Rails to Trails conversion in
Indiana stretching 70 miles from Marion, Indiana, to Richmond.  Thirty five miles are paved.  The right of way was once used by the Chesapeake and Ohio (Chessie) System and Amtrak.  Our afternoon tour will cover about 10 miles of the greenway from Muncie’s downtown depot trailhead to the south end of the trail.   The tour is at a leisurely pace and will pass along a country park, a round barn, and land trust conservation area.  There are interpretive stops along the way.  A bus will pick us up at the end of the trail and bring us back to Muncie.  The trip will last about 2 hours.  Helmets are required for all riders.  We have a limited number of helmets. You may bring your own or they can be purchased at cost from the Greenway headquarters.  There is no fee for the use of the bicycles.

Tour of Paws Inc. Solar Aquatic Waste Treatment Facility
Paws, Inc. is the company of internationally recognized cartoonist Jim Davis, the creator of "Garfield".  Davis has encorporated features that reflect his strong environmental ethic into his Muncie area headquarters facilities. The solar aquatic waste treatment plant is a wastewater restoration system situated in a greenhouse that duplicates the way nature would treat waste in a rock marsh or wetland. The ecologically engineered sewage treatment plant uses solar energy, plants and animals in a system designed to enhance natural responses which biochemically change or remove contaminants from sewage. These natural responses include the appetites of bacteria for human waste, the tendency of algae to thrive in sunlit water and feed on matter broken down by bacteria, and the ability of a number of incidentally beautiful plants to take up heavy metals and metabolize them.

Tree Walk/Tours of BSU Christy Woods, Orchid Greenhouse and Teaching & Research Greenhouse
As part of the tour options for the Greening of the Campus Conference, a special guided Tree Walk in the Christy Woods Outdoor Teaching Laboratory/Field Property and a tour of the Orchid Greenhouses and Teaching & Research Greenhouse has been scheduled to follow the Tree Walk.

Christy Woods is an 18 acre property located on the southwest corner of the Ball State University campus.  Christy Woods is one of six properties managed by the Field Station and Environmental Education Center, (composed of Departments of Biology, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Geology, and Landscape Architecture).  Christy Woods is an outdoor teaching laboratory for Ball State Students as well as the community.  Approximately two-thirds of the area is covered by mature deciduous forest, dominated by a mixture of oak, hickory, ash, walnut, hackberry, and maple. An open area located in the center of the Christy Woods property divides the forest into east and west sections.  Much of the open area is filled with tall grass prairie, as once dominated much of northwest Indiana.  Other plant communities represented include bog, sedge meadow/fen, and pond.

The two greenhouses include The Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank (WOCSB) and the Teaching and Research Greenhouse (TRGH).  For generic facility information visit: www.bsu.edu/web/fseec/environment/ .

Meeting Time: Saturday September 17 at 1:45 pm
Meeting Place: Outside the West end of Pittenger Student Center
Length of tour:  1 hour for the Tree Walk + 30 minutes in greenhouses for                                 those interested

If you would like to particpate, please send an e-mail noting your interest to:  jetaylor@bsu.edu
